“Korea’s Corruption Risk Assessment to be introduced in Myanmar ”

ACRC signed Korea-Myanmar MOU on anti-corruption cooperation

□ Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC, Chairperson Pak Un Jong) announced that it signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) on anti-corruption cooperation with Myanmar Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in May 30 to share Corruption Risk Assessment, develop integrity education materials, and exchange information.

□ Signing of the MOU has been pursued following a consensus on the need for comprehensive cooperation between Korea and Myanmar when ACRC and UNDP introduced Korea’s Corruption Risk Assessment (CRA)* to Myanmar in February this year.

*Corruption Risk Assessment (CRA) is a corruption prevention instrument that systemically analyzes and removes corruption-causing factors in laws and regulations at the legislative stage. Korea conducted CRA for the first time in 2006 and has since shared the effective anti-corruption instrument with other countries.

Under the Korea-Myanmar Anti-Corruption Cooperation MOU, ACRC and ACC will not only exchange information to prevent and tackle corruption, but also develop integrity education materials, and strengthen cooperation and promotional activities in areas requiring cooperation. This MOU is expected to result in more active anti-corruption cooperative activities between the two nations

Since Myanmar is a member state of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and recognized as a nation with high growth potential, cooperation with the nation will be in line with the Korean government’s East Asia Policy which emphasizing cooperation with ASEAN. It will also contribute to expansion of anti-corruption cooperation with other ASEAN countries.

□ Meanwhile, during a workshop to be held until Jun 1, the ACRC will introduce to ACC and relevant agencies the CRA which removes corruption-causing factors in laws and regulations.

To provide a practical help to Myanmar in adopting CRA, the workshop introduces the actual cases of CRA which were well received at an Integrity Training and gives the Myanmar delegation an opportunity to conduct CRA on those cases themselves as well as sharing know-how on institutionalizing CRA.

□ Pak Un Jong, Chairperson of ACRC, said, “It is expected that the MOU between ACRC and ACC and CRA workshop could contribute to the successful introduction and establishment of Korea’s anti-corruption policies in Myanmar. This will help contribute to better business environment for Korean companies operating in Myanmar.”
