Korea’s Anti-Corruption Initiative Assessment will be introduced in Uzbekistan, Korea’s major partner country in its New Northern Policy.

The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC, Chairperson Pak Un Jong) announced that the commission, jointly with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), held a three-day workshop on Anti-Corruption Initiative Assessment for Uzbek public officials from April 24, 2019.

The Anti-Corruption Initiative Assessment (AIA) assesses public agencies’ anti-corruption efforts and achievements to enhance their integrity level. The AIA is conducted every year on all public agencies in Korea.

The workshop for Uzbek officials, which was organized as part of UNDP Seoul Policy Center’s ‘Development Solutions Partnership (DSP)*’, discussed ways for the successful implementation of the AIA in Uzbekistan.

* DSP is UNDP’s program to share Korea’s development experiences with other countries using the UNDP’s global network.

During the workshop, the ACRC shared its experiences and knowhow on the operation of the AIA. Especially, since the Uzbek delegation has a great interest in Korea’s IT technology, the ACRC explained National Integrity Information System, an online integrity portal.

The workshop was attended by ten public officials from Uzbek anti-corruption related government agencies, such as the Ministry of Justice, the General Prosecutor’s Office and the State Tax Office and representatives from UNDP Seoul Policy Center and UNDP Uzbekistan.

Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding on anti-corruption cooperation in December 2015, the ACRC and the UNDP have successfully carried out anti-corruption cooperative projects to share Korea’s outstanding anti-corruption policies with countries around the world.

This led to the adoption of AIA in Vietnam in 2018, Corruption Risk Assessment in Myanmar and Kosovo in 2018. And in 2019, Uzbekistan and Malaysia are adopting Anti-Corruption Initiative Assessment.

ACRC Chairperson Lee Geonlee said, “the ACRC will provide a continuous support to Uzbekistan in establishing and implementing the AIA with success”. He added, “the ACRC will continue to share Korea’s successful anti-corruption measures with developing countries, playing a pivotal role befitting the status of the country in the world.”
