For the first time, Korea’s outstanding anti-corruption policies such as Integrity Assessment and Anti-Corruption Initiative Assessment will be introduced to a Central Asian country, Uzbekistan.

The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC, Chairperson Pak Un Jong) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on anti-corruption cooperation with Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) of Uzbekistan on October 25, 2019.

The signing of the MOU was ed by the mutual consensus reached in August 2018 by ACRC Chairperson and the Head of Prosecutor’s Office of Uzbekistan on the need for comprehensive anti-corruption cooperation, when Uzbekistan Head of Prosecutor’s Office visited Korea.

Under the Korea-Uzbekistan MOU on Anti-Corruption Cooperation, for the next three years the ACRC and PGO will: provide assistance in anti-corruption laws and regulations such as the Anti-Corruption Initiative Assessment; exchange anti-corruption related information; and cooperate in areas requiring cooperation such as co-hosting anti-corruption events in the form of workshops, seminars and so on.

The ACRC, jointly with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), held anti-corruption policy lectures for Uzbekistan anti-corruption related authorities including GOP in September 2019. Next year, the ACRC will provide assistance in successful implementation of the AIA and deliver lectures on other effective anti-corruption policies of Korea such as the Integrity Assessment and Whistleblower Protection and Compensation.

Uzbekistan is known as a land of opportunity with its mass land and abundant natural recourse. Now the country is strenuously making anti-corruption efforts, setting anti-corruption reform as the first priority in government policies and launching anti-corruption related agency Council.

ACRC Chairperson Pak Un Jong said, “the MOU is expected to strengthen anti-corruption capacities of both Korea and Uzbekistan and contribute to the expansion of anti-corruption cooperation to other countries in the Central Asia”.
